El Matt - 'The Crazy One'
In Costa Vescovato, a small Piedmontese municipality located about an hour east of Langhe in the province of Alessandria, there is a vineyard called “Cascina San Leto”. Founded by Carlo and Clementina in 1929 and always family-run. The eight hectares of vines, arranged in a natural amphitheater offer a breathtaking panorama of the splendid Tortona hills.
The winery is now in the hands of Daniele his wife Loredana and son Mattia. Daniele, one of the "Timorasso Boys" who was part of the movement to re-establish the Timorasso grape in the area, has been running his grandparents' land for 20 years. He has embraced the organic / biodynamic philosophy which has been a cornerstone in the rediscovery of the territory. Every choice taken between the vines is considered and rational, with the utmost respect for the balance between, nature, biodiversity and the ecosystem.
Indigenous yeasts for fermentation, neither filtration nor clarification is carried out, and bottling is performed during the most auspicious lunar phases. Finally, the aging, particularly for the whites, makes use of large acacia wood barrels. From all this, truly interesting wines emerge.
